The Thames: Images by Leo Townsend

The riverside themed images on our website were taken over summer 2008 on and around a working pier on the river Thames in central London. They were all taken in house by Leo.

The river Thames has been at the heart of London since the city developed as a deep water port and a bridgehead across the Thames from Roman times. The ports in the lower reaches of the Thames continue to be a significant part of the the united Kingdom’s sea borne trading and handle over 50 million tones of cargo each year http://www.pla.co.uk/. However improvements to water quality now mean that the Thames estuary is a prime example of a recovering ecosystem. It provides a habitat for 121 different species of fish and an estimated 170,000 birds http://www.thamesweb.com/

The river is one of central Londons largest and also least used public open spaces. The opportunities are there to engage with it more. Use the commuter passenger ferry services that ply the river from Putney to Greenwich (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/modalpages/2648.aspx) or integrate the Sustrans riverside paths into your cycle journeys. http://www.sustrans.co.uk/default.asp?sID=1093338220720 Experience the river at speed on a fast rigid inflatable boat http://www.londonribvoyages.com/ or just remember to enjoy the view next time you walk cross Hungerford footbridge!
