Alex's work is beguilingly simple and achieves a rare beauty. The
selectivity in the choice of material, gleaned as it is from everyday
newsprint, combines a fineness of scale and painterly composition to produce
subtle expressions of line shadow and field. In Alex's hands depth becomes
an attribute of detail rather than an illusion of tone or perspective. A
rich seam of variation is found within the apparently repetitive machine
crafted graphic elements such as dots stars and dashes from which the works
are formed. A tension is also embodied in the pieces by the painstaking
manner of their crafting. This energy is at its greatest where Alex breaks
free of the constraints and relative permanence of a canvas and appropriates
the fabric of buildings themselves as the field for the work. The energy in
the crafting of the piece is heightened by an anticipation of its temporary
nature.
