FAQ 1:
How do I turn it on?
Check
that the computer is plugged into the mains and switched on. If your
powerbook or ibook battery is empty it will not start. Plug it into
the mains and retry.
Old beige Apple- press power key on keyboard (triangle pointing left)
Early imac- press power button on keyboard ( exclamation mark in circle)
Recent imacs press power button on lower right hand side of screen (exclamation
mark in circle)
G4, press power button directly under speaker on front of
processor box (exclamation mark in circle)
powerbook press power button top right hand side of keyboard
and ibook (exclamation mark in circle)

Always use the finder command to shutdown the
computer do not use the switch on the power supply until after it has
shut down fully!

The screen is on but the computer does
not respond to the keyboard or the mouse
Check
that the keyboard and mouse cables have not been dislodged !
If this does not correct the problem. Press <alt apple escape>
simultaneously to force quit from application. If successful a dialogue
box will appear asking you to confirm that you wish to quit the application
and that any unsaved changes will be lost !!! Save any open documents
in any other open applications then restart the computer.
If <alt apple escape> does not successfully quit the application
you will need to force the computer to reboot. To do this press <apple,
ctrl and the keyboard power key> simultaneously. If this option is
not available or does not work then you should use the reboot button.
On old beige macs this was usually achieved with a reboot button on
the front or rear. Early imacs had a small hole near the cable ports
into which you should introduce a straightened paperclip. More recent
imacs and G4s have a small raised button with a triangle symbol.
Only if this does nott work then use the power key to restart
the computer.
If your computer crashes please report this to IT SUPPORT

The computer is telling me that it is out
of memory!
Occasionally your computer may bring up a dialogue box which warns you
that there is insufficient memory. It is talking about RAM memory not
your hard disk memory. RAM is used by finder and other applications
to actually run. It is not used for long term file storage.
If you get this error click on the desktop the first step is to quit
out of any unused applications.
If this does not work restart your computer and try again.
If this does not work quit out of the affected application then in finder
open up your hard disk and find the application folder. Open the application
folder and identify the application file ( it will have a special icon)
highlight the application ( dont double click on it) then go to
memory settings options and increase the memory settings.
If you have quit all other applications and increased the memory allocation
to the maximum available and you still run out of memory we suggest
you contact IT SUPPORT.
As a short term fix if you are using mac os 8 or above go to the memory
control panel turn on virtual memory if it is not already on and increase
the virtual memory settings and try again.
We do not recommend extensive use of virtual memory as it slows down
the computer when in use. We would strongly recommend that virtual memory
is always turned off in any version of Mac Os 7 as it can lead to erroneous
low memory warnings in some applications
If low memory problems are persistent contact IT SUPPORT.

My Microsoft application opens but it does
not work properly.
Particularly in Microsoft applications Word,
Excel powerpoint Internet Explorer , Outlook Express and Entourage Memory
errors can occur without low memory dialogue boxes occurring. The usual
symptom is incomplete loading of toolbars and menus . Proceed as with
"Out of memory errors"
If this fails to address the problem contact IT SUPPORT

My Mac is telling me that it cant save
my file because the Disk is Full.
If you get a dialogue box indicating that a
disk is full. Try saving to another disk floppy or zip. If this is not
possible go into Finder application. Firstly empty the wastebasket (items
in the wastebasket still exist and therefore fill up your disks) and
secondly look at the contents of the disk and determine if you have
any redundant information which you can safely put in the wastebasket
and then empty the wastebasket again.
The underlying problem is that the disk you are using is full! You should
archive files onto zip or CDR and delete them from the hard disk).
Occasionally spurious disk full errors can be reported but this usually
only happens with networked computers.

My Mac is telling me that it cant save
my file because the File cannot be found
This may be because you have removed the zip
or floppy disc that the file was stored on or if you are connected to
another Mac the network connection may have been lost or the other computer
has crashed.

happens!
Printer problems can be the result of a variety
of problems check all of the following
Check that printer is on and does not have a paper jam, open door etc.
Check printer has paper
Check that printer is not asking for an unexpected paper size
If yes to all of above
Check printer is visible in chooser.
If not then check all cables
If printer still not working look at printer queue or print spooling
software. Check that it is not paused.
If printer still not working quit unused applications and/or reduce
memory allocated to application to free up more memory for system.
If all else fails delete all unprinted documents and restart computer
and printer.
